Designers flooded the runways at New York Fashion Week with an ocean of liquid inspired creations most notably at BCBG, Nicole Miller, Gottex and Tony Francesc. Water Works at New York Fashion Week

Liquid creations dominate New York runways - a summary of designers who did it best.
| A technicolor surf was splashed across dresses at BCBG in a blend of neon and water colors like ocean turquoise and marsh green. Short dresses with sheer panels suggested the uneven quality of water’s ebb and flow, while tight rushing gave fabric a rippled effect. Jagged trains and cascading pieces on longer dresses created a thrashing effect, like a saunter through ankle length water with a splash at every step. More smooth sailing pieces in black, white and grey were given dripping wet silver accents to compliment their flow. |
|
One can only imagine making a splash in these dresses at ocean front destinations like South Beach, the Riviera or Greek islands.

| Inspired by the ocean, Nicole Miller’s whirlpools and waves of color, described as ‘digital ocean current’ and ‘digital riptide’ patterns, washed onto tight and loose fitting dresses as well as separates. Sequin silver pieces resembled the gleaming, sparkling surface of the sea and were reminiscent of scales on a shiny, swimming fish. With a mix of patterned and sleek black and white separates, Miller matched several pieces with a ‘scuba pant’, a heartier, more flattering version of a legging in full and bike short lengths for a sporty look. | Instead of adhering to traditional notions of light colors and floaty styles for spring, Miller’s approach of dark colors and fitted shapes is tempered by the theme of water which gives it the feel of spring while separating it from the flock of it’s land bound contemporaries. Blue surf charged onto white fabric ashore, while slick liquid suits and kelp-like flowing kaftans replicated an underwater perspective. Suits were adorned with pronounced mermaid-like accents of shells and coral, especially along necklines. Coordinating wrap around headbands, wide belts with gleaming metal hardware, and the dramatic flowing kaftans that accompanied some pieces delivered the glamour quotient synonymous with Gottex. |

Designed for an empress to impress her following, Gottex swimwear is nothing short of a designer outfit. Its reference to the sea may be as close as some of these pieces ever get to water lest one risk damaging such beautiful creations.

| In a collection expressly and appropriately titled ‘Water’s Mood’, Toni Francesc explores the many shapes of water across the dress form in soothing tones of deep sea blue, moist moss green and what can only be described as a moonlit reflection on the ocean. Soft, ripple-like pleats draped along the sides of dresses and across the hips of skirts proved exceptionally buoyant. Smooth shiny satins, billowy sheer fabrics and ripple effect prints only reverberated the water theme throughout the collection. Models emerged like water nymphs wearing blue shadow that traversed their sight line but in clothes that were approachable and wearable. |
Francesc’s signature navy blue gown would undoubtedly be a perfect fit for fashionable starlets like fellow Aussi Naomi Watts.
