Bryant Park is where Mercedes-Benz hosted designers' spring collections during New York Fashion Week. With big name designers gaming for attention it was smaller labels that made the most memorable impressions. Ports 1961, Editions by Georges Chakra, Thuy and Venexiana demonstrated dramatically different perspectives to earn "Best In Show" at Bryant Park. . . New York Fashion Week Roundup

The Best of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week

Cherry Blossom Season at Ports 1961 |
Tia Cibani set the bar on day one of New York Fashion Week with a collection reminiscent of modern day Tokyo during cherry blossom season: delicate, fresh and feminine in modern shapes with a Japonais twist that made Ports 1961 the talk of Fashion Week. Most striking were the sheaths, tops, jackets and trousers loosely constructed from Japanese kimono and obi-like fabrics in shades of white and blossom colors. Waists were cinched with wide “obi belts” in coordinating fabric or in contrasting leather. |
|
The concept of opulent fabric wrapped around the body loosely, of creating shape without harsh structure and cinching at the waist with an ultra wide belt like the obi made this a celebration rather than mockery of Japanese culture. While some considered Cibani taking the theme to such lengths a risk, the payoff set Ports 1961 apart as one of this season’s most remarkable collections.

Georges Chakra pioneers eveningwear, finding new ways to create glamorous shapes, dazzling embellishments, innovative straps and new uses for the most luxe fabric textures. He works as easily with bright shades of neon green and lemon yellow as he does with subtle bronze, not-so basic black and white and muted pastels. Highlights included suspended shoulder straps, where curtain rod-like metal hardware hung draped fabric across gowns. Billowing sheer skirts gave sexy legroom displays while waists were cinched with double wrapped, silver leather belts fastened with ribbon. |
In what can only be described as rare for a single show, there was a dress for every shape of body. While consistently embellishing with silver the runway was flooded with Ballerina-like tulle, classic fishtails and flamenco like hems as well as short sharp shapes and fluttery babydolls. The only cause for concern was identifying which celebrity to dress in each gown!

She Knows What She Wants at Thuy |
Thuy Diep dresses the woman who doesn’t adhere to traditional notions of floral prints and floaty dresses for spring. Having descended from the boardroom, Thuy understands that the workingwoman is more interested in wearing burnt sienna than bubblegum pink. Chic separates fit to mix and match walked down the runway side-by-side. Dress components were layered to frame exposed skin creating an understated sex appeal. Statement jackets were bold while the rest of the collection was subtly embellished with her trademarked exposed zipper. |
|
With a marked presence of rich colors like eggplant and mustard, Thuy’s collection did not scream springtime. Instead it struck a cord with women who value fashion with function and looking chic over cultivating a garden on their outfit. Part of appreciating this collection was the ability to imagine wearing it. Watch highlights from Thuy! |
Once Upon A Time at Venexiana |

|
Kati Stern believes in fairytales as evidenced in her collection of princess-like gowns and cocktail dresses designed to shimmer, shine, flutter and flow. Sequined fabric in white and black were given contrasting floral appliqués that twined over shoulders and across bodies. Halter neck dresses in orange sherbet and coral pink floated at ankle lengths with dance-like movement across the floor. Fully skirted bell shapes created in textured metallics as well as in black and white, with trademark exaggerated bows speckling the collection created a window into a fantasyland of Kati Stern’s creation. |
With a handful of leaf prints, polka dots, lace and even a sari inspired gown, there was a dress to match the story of every princess that lived happily ever after. Whether opting for a flamboyant evening gown or a regal cocktail dress, the woman who wears Venexiana is clearly the belle of the ball. Watch highlights from Venexiana! |
